Essence of Baroque Sculpture

“Essence of Baroque Sculpture,” is an exercise in analysis, and deconstruction. As students, we talk about and learn from masterworks from great time periods for art like the Renaissance in Italy, or the Baroque period that followed directly after. It is this conversation and curiosity surrounding work from these time periods which drives this series, along with a fascination to explore the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional work and the ambition to learn from successful artists before me.

I wanted these drawings to be recognizable, in essence, as the sculptures they reference, not from recognizable faces or iconic details, but emotion, movement and atmosphere, separated from iconic figures such as David and St Teresa. The scene and characters are secondary to the essence of what make these sculptures iconic.
